I saw a video by creator Stephanie Booth that changed my mind. She puts an expandable hook rack—usually reserved for hats and winter jackets—inside her kitchen cabinets. It holds pots, pans, and lids in place. It actually works.
Why a Coat Rack Beats Pot Lid Organizers
Booth’s method is simple but smart.
First, clear the cabinet. Group like items. Then, place the accordion-style rack on the top shelf, facing up. Stand pots, pans, and lids vertically between the hooks.
It’s similar to a lid organizer. But better.
Items sit individually. No stacking. You don’t have to unpack a whole cabinet to get one pan out. And unlike rigid plastic organizers, these racks are expandable. You can adjust them to fit different cabinet sizes or item shapes. They come in chic wood designs too. They don’t look like ugly plastic junk.
This hack doesn’t require installation.
No drilling. No damage.
If your rack doesn’t stretch fully, use renter-friendly adhesive strips or museum putty for extra support. Just make sure it’s secure.

You probably have a coat rack gathering dust. Use it.
If not, Amazon has plenty of expandable wooden options. Search for “expandable wooden coat rack.” Look for one that fits your cabinet width comfortably.
