I used to eat a salad every day for lunch. Like, strictly. So I know dressings. I really do. Some folks say dressing is “joy in a bottle.” Maybe that’s dramatic. Or maybe it is. A good drizzle can save a bowl of sad greens. Or turn it into a dip.
Most of us stick to one brand. It’s tribal stuff. I went looking for the winners. Visited stores in Asheville. Then NYC. Asked shoppers what they buy. What comes up most? What actually tastes okay? Here’s what the crowds told me.
Chick-fil-A Avocado Lime ranch
Restaurant merch is usually garbage. Not this. It’s surprisingly flexible.
A shopper at Ingles in Asheville told me Ruthie loved this one. Chick-fil-A Avocado Lime. She said it works on salads, obviously. But also wraps. And sandwiches.
I don’t hit the drive-thru often. I tried the dressing on a wrap once though. It worked. It’s light. Creamy enough without drowning out the lime. You won’t taste the fake avocado powder if you look away fast.
“Great on salads, sandwiches, and wraps, too” — Ruthie, Asheville shopper
Hidden Valley Ranch
You have had this. We all have.
Even chefs stock it. Why? It’s just reliable. I met Tyler at Food Bazaar. He said if he could only pick one dressing for the rest of his life? Hidden Valley. He’d be fine with it.
I get it. The nostalgia is strong. I used to beg my mom to drive us to the actual “Hidden Valley.” Thought it was a real place where wizards made ranch. It wasn’t. Just a factory.
This stuff is thick. It coats your plate. It coats the pizza, apparently. If you’re the type who dumps white sauce on red sauce, this is your anthem. It doesn’t try to be subtle.

Newman’s Own Balsamic
My grandma loves this bottle.
She’s sweet. And she was right about this. She called it the best balsamic. Her go-to for “green things.” Specifically? Mixed greens. Walnuts. Dried cranberries.
I tried it. It is good. Simple. Bright.
Plus, the moral high ground helps. 100 percent of profits go to charity. They’ve given away like $600 million. It doesn’t hurt to support a cause, even if the sauce is just decent vinegar and oil.

Which one lives in your fridge? Or do you just make it from scratch and pretend you’re cooler than you are? Let’s argue about it below.
